Referrals
The majority of health problems can be solved at our clinic. If your doctor assess that your problem is better solved at another doctor or hospital, we will refer you accordingly.
We must always see you in the clinic before making a referral
A referral is a medical document in which your doctor asks for help with an examination or treatment elsewhere in the healthcare system.
In order to make a correct referral, we must assess you medical problem ourselves. This is because the referral is based on a current medical assessment, including medical history, objective findings and assessment of the need for further examination or treatment. At the same time, we must ensure that relevant examinations and any treatment have been carried out (when relevant).
A referral needs to cover the following:
Current symptoms and their duration
Relevant examination findings
Past medical history and treatments
Current medication status and allergies
Results of relevant tests and examinations
Suspected diagnosis or the purpose of the referral
Information on urgency
Incomplete referrals may delay the investigation or result in the referral being rejected or returned with the need for additional information.
Can I decide whether I want to be referred?
No, you cannot “demand” a referral. The need for a referral is a medical decision for your doctor to make and it is a requirement that you have been examined first by your doctor. Referrals cannot be made over the phone or via the reception staff, unless there is a specific agreement with your doctor. This also applies to referrals to psychological help.
How do I get an appointment if I have been referred?
If you have been referred to another specialist: We upload the referral to the "referral server". This allows the recipient to activate the referral and schedule an appointment when you contact the clinic. This means you don't have to bring any paper form. You can find a practitioner near you at www.sundhed.dk.
If you have been referred to a hospital: You will receive an appointment notice electronically via e-Boks.
Do I always need a referral?
No. A number of health services do not require a referral from your doctor: smoking cessation courses and other municipal health services.
Nor is a referral required for consulting ophthalmologists, ear-nose-throat specialists or chiropractors.
